Although technically defined as "data about data," in practical photography terms, metadata is information about images. Adding information to photos, such as description, keywords and location where the photos were shot, can greatly help when organizing a mountain (or shoeboxes full) of images.
Two of the core features of Photosmith are our ability to support viewing and editing of industry-standard digital photo metadata, and then syncing this metadata with Adobe’s Lightroom. Photosmith also supports sharing photo metadata with standard XMP sidecar files, as discussed in Section 3.5.7.
There are two styles of photo metadata:
- IPTC: Manually created by the user using software like Photosmith and Lightroom.
- EXIF: Automatically generated by your digital camera.
Photosmith’s Tagging Mode is where you can explicitly define metadata to be associated with one or more photos.
